10 Camping Essentials I’ll Make Sure My Troop Has
10 Camping Essentials I’ll Make Sure My Troop Has
One of the things I’m most excited about as a troop leader is introducing our girls to the outdoors.
Camping has been a huge part of my life for years. I’ve spent countless nights under the stars, learned what gear is worth packing and what isn't, and discovered which items make outdoor adventures easier, safer, and more enjoyable.
As our troop begins its outdoor journey, I’m already building a list of essentials I’ll make sure we have for future campouts, hikes, and outdoor activities.
These aren’t necessarily the fanciest items. They’re the things I’ve found myself reaching for over and over again because they simply work.
1. A Well-Stocked First Aid Kit
When you’re camping with kids, bumps, scrapes, blisters, and bug bites are bound to happen. A quality first aid kit is always at the top of my packing list.
2. Reliable Flashlights and Extra Batteries
Somebody always forgets a flashlight. Somebody else’s batteries are always dead. Having extras on hand can save a lot of frustration after dark.
3. Headlamps
If you’ve ever tried setting up camp, finding the restroom, or cooking dinner while holding a flashlight in your mouth, you understand why headlamps are one of my favorite camping tools.
4. Weather Protection
Rain ponchos, sunscreen, hats, and bug spray are non-negotiable. The weather doesn’t care about your plans, so being prepared is key.
5. Refillable Water Bottles
Hydration is one of the easiest ways to keep everyone happy and healthy outdoors. Every scout should have a reusable water bottle, and I’ll always keep extra water available.
6. A Camp Cooking Kit
Some of the best camping memories happen around food. Whether we’re making foil packet dinners, campfire breakfasts, or simple snacks, having the right cooking gear makes everything easier.
7. A Troop Emergency Binder
This might not be exciting camping gear, but it’s one of the most important items I carry. Emergency contacts, medical forms, permission slips, and trip information all stay organized and easy to access.
8. Portable Power Banks
While camping is a chance to unplug, leaders still need access to communication and emergency resources. A charged power bank can be a lifesaver.
9. Camp Chairs
After a long day of hiking, activities, and camp setup, you’ll be thankful for a comfortable place to sit around the campfire.
10. Gear That Makes Camp Life Easier
As an experienced camper, I’m always looking for gear that saves space, serves multiple purposes, and earns its place in my camping setup.
One item I’ll definitely be bringing along as our troop begins camping adventures is:
Easy set up and take down! Being in Arizona, fires aren’t always permitted and this is a total life saver! From steaks to pancakes, it’s got you covered!
Why I’m Excited About Camping With Our Troop
Camping teaches so much more than outdoor skills.
It teaches confidence.
It teaches problem-solving.
It teaches resilience when things don’t go according to plan.
It teaches teamwork, leadership, and independence.
Some of my favorite memories have happened around a campfire, and I can’t wait to help create those same experiences for our girls.
As we prepare for future outdoor adventures, I've started building a collection of my favorite camping and troop gear recommendations. These are items I personally use, trust, or plan to add to our troop's outdoor program.
